True Detective Season 5 Confirms Antonio Banderas and Nicolas Cage as Its Leads

True Detective Season 5 will officially star Antonio Banderas and Nicolas Cage as its two leads. The next season of the HBO crime series confirmed the duo today with a video post on social media. Production is expected to begin in 2027, with a more specific release date for the follow-up episodes unclear for now. True Detective Season 4: Night Country showrunner Issa López is back to serve as showrunner on Season 5. While most plot details remain under wraps this early in development, the next batch of episodes are expected to take place in Jamaica Bay, New York, with Banderas tapped as Rai García and Cage set as Henry Logan, as told by The Hollywood Reporter.

Banderas and Cage are two names that have circulated in the TV rumor mill for some time. Word of Cage's potential involvement surfaced all the way back in August of last year, but updates on that front then went quiet for months. It wasn't until this past weekend that the actor took the stage at New York Comic Con to tease that he was still in the mix. "So, I think I’m probably going to do another season of television," he told the crowd (via THR). "I think I might do a season of True Detective. That’s OK that I’m the first to announce that, right?"

Now, both are officially on board. Cage made a name for himself with roles in movies like Raising Arizona, Face/Off, and National Treasure, but most recently appeared in projects like Spider-Noir, Longlegs, and Pig. Banderas' acting career has seen him star in things like The Mask of Zorro and Shrek, with his most recent roles including parts in Tony and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

With previous seasons of True Detective led by unforgettable duos like Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson (Season 1), and Jodie Foster and Kali Reis (Season 4), HBO is already off to a solid start.
