It took Democrat Scott Colom months to get his party and the nation to pay attention to his Senate race in Mississippi.
“It was very difficult, very difficult and difficult on a lot of fronts” Colom told CNN.
But now that Colom is on the doorstep of defying history, leading GOP Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith by just over 1,000 votes in a race too close to call, the Democratic cavalry is coming.
Lawyers and grassroots organizers have descended on the state and are setting up shop in each county to ensure that every vote is counted. Without specifying how many lawyers and representatives he has, Colom said he has “enough” resources, including a late influx of cash from an aggressive fundraising push.
Colom said the decision by the state’s secretary of state to clean up voter rolls using a commercial credit data program could impact the outcome of the race.
“We immediately went to work trying to make sure those voters were notified that they had been moved to inactive status,” Colom said. “Because of that, we probably were able to get some of it fixed.”
Even though Colom says he is confident he will win and that his lead will increase as more votes are counted, he said he will wait before declaring victory: “I’m going to talk to my team about that and follow the legal advice and the people that I trust.”
On whether he would support Sen. Chuck Schumer as majority leader if he does indeed win the seat, Colom said he didn’t want to get into hypotheticals but added, “we need leaders that understand rural America.”
