Capcom Clarifies Stance on AI After RE Engine Conference Comments
Resident Evil and Street Fighter developer Capcom has clarified its stance on AI and its future plans for the RE Engine in an exclusive conversation with IGN. During a yearly recruitment conference, programmer Satoshi Ishida outlined the company’s plan to incrementally improve its RE Engine using a program called REX (short for RE Next Engine). Rather than building a new engine from scratch, Capcom will take a series of steps to improve the existing RE Engine piece by piece, including the use of AI.
Capcom confirmed that games are becoming increasingly colossal undertakings, requiring immense amounts of time and resources to create. Seeing this challenge, the company plans to utilize AI to solve these issues and make its developers more efficient. This will involve improving development tools, testing game code, analyzing large chunks of data on their behalf, and providing other helpful benefits.
Capcom’s vision for REX is to implement these AI tools and efficiencies into the next iteration of the RE Engine to help the company make games faster with the strongest available tools. Crucially, a spokesperson clarified that Capcom has no plans to use generative AI in the creation of its games. Any AI used with the RE Engine will be strictly for speeding up processes and helping development teams be more efficient. This means AI will not be used for creating assets or programs within the games.
Capcom reiterated this stance, noting that while they plan to proactively use AI as a contributing technology to improve the efficiency and productivity of the game development process—exploring implementation in areas like graphics, sound, and programming—they will not implement assets generated by AI into their titles.
