The anticipation surrounding major updates to Overwatch has reached a fever pitch, with players eager for details on the next chapter of action. The wait is finally over, as Season 5 begins tomorrow, October 6th, promising a return to high-stakes combat and deep lore dives. This season kicks off with the arrival of Doctrine, a long-awaited new Support Hero whose history is deeply intertwined with Doomfist’s bloodied past. His escape from Grímsvötn not only cracks open one of Overwatch’s darkest secrets but sets the final chapter of the Reign of Talon in motion, years in the making.
Doctrine introduces a dark, sophisticated take on the vampire fantasy to the game. Having spent long enough in the shadows, this newest Support brings unique mechanics centered around manipulating lifeforce during combat. His Eternal Scepter allows him to heal allies and damage enemies from mid-to-long range, while his mechanical bat-like drones empower the team with both healing capabilities and increased attack speed. Furthermore, Doctrine utilizes Infuse, a mechanic that lets players empower his abilities when a moment calls for something more potent. His Ultimate ability is particularly formidable: it allows him to redistribute life force, granting allies Overhealth while simultaneously limiting enemy maximum health—a testament to how negotiable lifeforce can be if you ask the right vampire.
Doctrine’s emergence is tied directly to the volatile setting of Watchpoint: Grímsvötn. This Icelandic volcanic fissure, once an Overwatch facility and later controlled by Helix, has housed some of the world's most dangerous criminals, including Doomfist himself. Season 5 takes players deep into this location, which serves as the first new Escort map in years. Now, the conflict is escalating: Doomfist has returned to break Doctrine free, while Talon has taken control of the prison. Players will be pushed straight through a scene of crime, experiencing fire, ice, stolen technology, and forgotten prisoners as the consequences of the escape unfold around them.
Beyond the core story elements, Season 5 introduces several major seasonal modes designed for Halloween festivities. Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games turns death into an opportunity to get completely unhinged; players enter as a random Hero and return from every death with random new powers, stacking strange combinations together. Players also participate by completing challenges to collect Offerings, which can then be pledged to Ashe, Moira, or Winston. The Hero accumulating the most Offerings will be summoned into the mode next, leading up to a final week where all three Heroes rise from the grave, eventually bringing the roster to 20 playable Heroes. Additionally, each week features a new Event Pass for players to trick or treat through, offering spooky rewards and milestones while also allowing players to gather more Offerings in the graveyard.
Adding another layer of excitement is the much-anticipated Overwatch x Shadow Monarch collaboration. A mysterious Gate is opening onto the battlefield, bringing dark fantasy and high-impact anime style to the fight for a better future. Players can take up the mantle of Sung Jinwoo or find their fit among S-Rank Hunters like Cha Hae-In and Choi Jong-In, or answer the call of the Shadow Army as Igris and Iron. The collaboration features several unique pairings: Genji × Sung Jinwoo takes players from bottom Hunter to top Shadow Army commander; Reaper × Igris sees the Blood-Red Commander return as one of Jinwoo’s most formidable Shadow Soldiers; Anran × Cha Hae-In brings S-Rank heat with a calm, serious presence; Reinhardt × Iron gives the Shadow Army serious muscle; and Lifeweaver × Choi Jong-In pairs the Support with the intelligent Mage Hunter. These skins draw from unique visual identities, merging the colorful Heroes of Future Earth with a darker world.
The scope of Season 5 is massive, offering players everything from grappling with Doctrine’s vampiric powers to exploring the depths of Grímsvötn and participating in anime-inspired combat. The Gate won't stay open forever, so players are encouraged to take up the quest and enter this Overwatch x Shadow Monarch collaboration period between October 6th and October 19th.
