Avery the Poké Kid’s Family Speaks Out After Scalpers Use Child’s Death to Inflate Card Prices
The family of late Pokémon influencer Avery the Poké Kid is speaking out after scalpers have reportedly started using his death to artificially inflate the prices of a 30th Anniversary Jirachi SIR card. Avery passed away at age 12 following a seven-year battle with pancreatic cancer in late September. He was a dedicated fan of the Pokémon franchise and its trading card game. The situation escalated after a video of him excitedly opening and pulling a 30th Anniversary Jirachi SIR card went viral, drawing attention from the card’s artist. However, scalpers began exploiting this emotional moment to their advantage.
Pokémon TCG collectors noticed that the price of the 30th Anniversary Jirachi SIR card was rapidly climbing, with reports noting increases from $70 up to $100, largely attributed to Avery’s viral posthumous video. This sparked widespread backlash within the community, with users expressing disgust at profiting off a child's death.
In response to the fervor surrounding the card, Avery’s family published a statement on his official Instagram account. They distanced themselves from any cards sold in his name or likeness and urged scalpers to take down their listings immediately. The family stated: “We are not involved in or benefiting from any cards being sold in Avery’s name or likeness. We have not approved these sales. Please do so immediately. This does not honor Avery’s generous heart. We are mourning our son and caring for our children. Please let us do that in peace.”
