Avery the Poké Kid’s Family Speaks Out After Scalpers Use Child’s Death to Inflate Card Prices
The family of late Pokémon influencer Avery the Poké Kid is speaking out after scalpers have reportedly started using his death to artificially inflate the prices of a 30th Anniversary Jirachi SIR card. Avery passed away at age 12 following a seven-year battle with pancreatic cancer in late September. He was a devoted fan of the Pokémon franchise and its accompanying trading card game. After recording him opening a pair of card packs, the video went viral within the community, drawing attention even from the card’s artist. However, scalpers have reportedly capitalized on this situation. Collectors noted that the 30th Anniversary Jirachi SIR card had begun climbing rapidly in price, with one user observing it rise significantly, likely due to Avery’s posthumous video going viral. This has sparked widespread backlash within the TCG community, with users expressing disgust at profiting from a child's death. In response to the fervor surrounding the card, Avery’s family published a statement on his official Instagram account. They distanced themselves from any cards supposedly being sold in his name or likeness and urged scalpers to take down all related listings. The family stated: “We are not involved in or benefiting from any cards being sold in Avery’s name or likeness. We have not approved these sales. We have asked sellers to take their listings down. Please do so immediately. This does not honor Avery’s generous heart. We are mourning our son and caring for our children. Please let us do that in peace.”
